Practicing veterinary medicine in Tampa / South Tampa FL has many benefits but some of the most frustrating things that we have to deal with at this time of year are thunderstorms and fireworks. Many of our pets will develop a fear of thunder or fireworks and there are many things that can be tried in order to help them deal with these phobias. The best and hardest is gradual desensitization. This will slowly allow your pet to get used to the storms. There are also many products such as thunder jackets, that are supposed to calm your dog and make the storms less stressful. Lastly, you can medicate your pets in order for them to relax or sleep through the noise.
Each animal responds differently and which solution will work for you and your pet varies. Contact your veterinarian and they can help you try and get your pet to relax through the storms / noise. As always, if you have any questions please contact our animal hospital in Tampa at (813) 289-3925.
