Halloween is here and not everyone is happy about dressing up in costumes. Our veterinary team in Tampa sees and treats many forms of fear / anxiety in pets but this time of year a unique situation sometimes comes up. Certain pets are fearful of people dressed in strange costumes coming to their door. This is certainly more common for our canine companions but cats can also become fearful of this. They usually just hide as a response and therefore are not generally considered a problematic behavior. Dogs on the other hand can begin barking, or even become aggressive. The good news is that this situation only comes once a year, so keeping your pet in another room or even a kennel, if they are accustomed to it, is an easy solution. This will make is a less stressful night for both you and your pet.
As mentioned earlier, our veterinarians treat pets around the Tampa area for many forms of anxiety / fear. No one solution will work for every case, there are multiple strategies for handling these situations.
