We, at Beach Park Animal Clinic, an animal hospital in Tampa / South Tampa, always discuss with our clients the importance of regular examinations and screening blood work. Our regular policy is yearly examinations for our pets under 7 years of age and twice yearly for those 7 and above. Having lab work done at least yearly is also very important to help detect disease as early as possible so we can begin treatment quickly. One of our recent cases demonstrated the importance of such blood work that ended up saving a dog’s life. Our patient presented for a routine dental cleaning and our lab work detected anemia. Based on this, further testing was recommended and a splenic nodule was diagnosed. A splenectomy was performed before this nodule ruptured with could have been fatal.
This is just one of many cases that illustrates the importance of regular physical exams and blood work, even if your pet is acting “healthy” at home. Early detection allows us to begin treatment of many diseases which gives your pet the best chance.
