Getting a new puppy is a very exciting time for anyone. There are so many questions and things to purchase that it can be a very overwhelming time as well. Our veterinarians in Tampa understand this and are here to help make the most of this fun, exciting time. Our initial visit with your new puppy is one of the most important ones since it will set the groundwork for a long, healthy lifetime.
At the first visit to our Tampa animal clinic, we cover a lot of important topics and try to set the stage for a proactive health plan. Initially, the puppy is examined to make sure there are no current health issues that need to be addressed and then our vets will spend plenty of time going over many subjects. This is also a great time to bring your list of questions. The list of topics discussed during the visit will include proper heart worm and flea preventatives, house training, vaccination protocols and obedience training. Make sure to leave plenty of time for this visit because we want to make sure all questions are answered.
The vaccination protocol is generally Distemper /Parvo boosters every 3 weeks beginning at 8 weeks of age. Usually your puppy will have had it’s initial vaccine before you take them home. These boosters are essential so your pet generates the proper immune response to protect it out in the world. At 16 weeks of age, they will receive their Rabies vaccination and this usually marks the end of the puppy series of vaccines. Based on your puppies lifestyle, there may be additional vaccines recommended but once again, this will all be discussed by your vet at the initial visit.
Proper heart worm and flea preventatives are another important aspect of your puppies proactive health plan. There are many different options available and our veterinary staff will make sure your pet is on the right one for their lifestyle. As with any disease, prevention is usually a lot safer than treatment and the same principle applies with heart worms and fleas / ticks.
These are just a few of the important topics covered at your puppies first visit. Our vets in Tampa want to make sure that we get your pet started in the right direction and you get all your questions answered. Having a great ground work for your puppies health care plan will allow you to enjoy this time instead of being stressed out. As with any veterinary topic, if you have questions, please bring them up to your veterinary health care team. They are there to help!!
