Having a veterinary clinic in Tampa / South Tampa, Florida, causes us to see many cases of external parasites.  The major one that draws most of the attention, especially during the summer, is fleas.  Recently, we have seen an increase is cases of flea related disease that illustrates a sometimes forgotten topic, flea PREVENTION.  Even though there are so many great flea preventatives on the market right now, why are we still seeing so many fleas?  The reason is that many people will begin to use them initially and get rid of the fleas but do not continue with regular dosing and do not treat the environment as well.  Without these 2 things, none of the flea preventatives are able to deal with the overwhelming, constant flea burden in our warm climate.  Remember, these flea medications are to be used as preventatives, not treatments.

If you have any questions about this, or any other topic, please contact Beach Park Animal Clinic, a veterinary hospital in Tampa / South Tampa at 813-289-3925.
